A constant feeling of demoralization and a lack of motivation, prevent us from being productive in life. Without productivity, we become demoralized and demotivated again. It is a vicious circle and it affects self-esteem greatly. You may have been wondering at one time or another: “How can I declare war on de-motivation?” or “How can I motivate myself?”

I just gave you the first hint towards improving your motivational status. The power to motivate has to come from you. If you depend on other people to cheer you up and to get you going for the day, you will find yourself in a very lonely position. It is not other peoples responsibility to motivate you and they can’t, because they do not know you, as well as you do.

Other people may not have the skill or ability to motivate you again and again. On top of that, other people have their own motivational status to worry about. It is not easy for them to keep it together, either! It may even burden them, if they feel that your power of pursuit of happiness depends on them. It is too big a responsibility to take on and only you should do that.

You have to make a change to feel motivated: turn your bad habit into a productive one. To draw energy to make the change, use the anger or disappointment you may feel towards yourself, for not doing enough on a daily basis. Use these negative emotions and make them drive you towards your goal.

For example, a bad habit showing de-motivation is procrastinating. You never get the work done on time, because you always schedule it for another time. Use this bad habit to your advantage, by working against it. You are in the driver’s seat. Every time you notice that you are procrastinating, tell yourself “quit stalling” and do something funny, such as lightly slapping yourself on the hand. Then dive head first straight away into the job you have to do, without pre-planning, pre-thinking, pre-doing-anything-at-all.

This will be tough to get used to at the beginning. But human beings are beings of habits. And once a habit has been established it is easy to keep it up. One light hand slap and your motivational hamster will start working those wheels. Turn your bad habit into a productive one. Be patient and work hard on it. And you will see, it will get easier some day and your good habit will improve your life greatly!

Do you know why hamsters need their wheel? Running is great exercise, which means they’re more likely to stay fit, healthy and not get too fat. This is how motivation works, too! 🙂
